How my media products uses forms and conventions of real media products

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMQQpmm5u3w

I believe, my movie creates creates, not only tension, but suspence. This adds to the main theme of my move ,thriller, and furthermore attracts my target audience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZu1cTg-xUM

This movie has a similar opening to mine, as they both open up with some information about what has happened. This makes the audience eager to watch the movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcxgk18AINI

Unlike in 'The Blair Witch Project' where you are given a load of extreem close ups, both to should un proffectional camera work, but so you get to know the characters on a personal level. I have put none of these shot into my movie as I want the audience to feel detatched from the characters, so the realise the bad they have done, and that what happened inthere own fault. In which I am then hoping it plays on there mind, and stopping them from bullying in the future.

The camera I used
What I have Leanrt about technologies from making my product

I have learnt many skilols from making my monie opening, on of which is how to expectly use angles and how to possition the tripod in perticular places to get a perticular effect. I also learned how to upload the videos from the camcorder, on to the computer, and then. 'Adobe Premiere Pro' (which is the soft wear I used to edit my moive)

While using this soft wear, I learned a number of techniques on it, on of which was cutting certain parts out of my of my movie out, thus resulting in me being able to cut every thing i dont want out of my different shots, improving the quality.

I also learned to cut sound out, by dragging the sound I didnt want onto a different level, and simply mute it. It then ment i could play different music over the top of my movie. This means, instead of having unpleasant wind in the background of whats happening, I could put eary music on instead, meaning the feel of my movie will become even more eary, and jumpy, esspeacially if I but loud music in the right places. Over all adding to the effect of it.

Another peice of soft wear I learned to use was blogger its self. This means I am able to make a portfolio that is need and tidy, and it also means I am able to access my work anywhere I go.

How I attracted/addressed my audience

Written Laungage

This shows my slender man jumping on the screen and off again
Clip one (sorry it isnt actually a clip)

Another way I attracted my audience was to pick a theme that people of my target audience would know, in this case, the popular meme Slenderman. This means the storey will interest them, and would make it more likely for them to want to watch it.

What progress I have made from my preliminary task

One of the major things I have learned from making my preliminary movie was that having my actors speak loud and clearly enough for the camera misc to pick up. Another way I have progressed from my preliminary movie was to pick the right actors from the right parts. The character who gets his face slapped in my preliminary movie (John wilson), I found, was two quiet for the camera to pick up, so I gave him the roll of 'Slenderman' as it wasn't a talking part. However if I was to do it again I would chose a different actor to play the man who died, as well as the man who slapped John (Jack Stevenson) as I believe he couldn't act serious enough for the roll, as he kept on smirking, fortunately I have attempted to cut out most of his unfocused smirks and laughs, although it would be something I would avoid if I was to do it again.

John  (as Slenderman)
John Wilson

Jack as himself
Jack Stevenson

One last thing I believe I have made progress in, is my lighting, in my preliminary movie the lighting in it makes it so that it is hard to make out my characters, also it changes from scene to scene. However in my main movie, I have concentrated to make my lighting as natural, and similar as possible. (please see preliminary movie above and 'Final movie draft' or    DVD of 'The Slender Man')

How my media product represents a particular social group

A screen shot from the movie 'The Blair Witch Project'
The photo featured in my movie opening of the
group of  friend

Both of these social groups are similar because they are both students, they are both dressed casually, and are obviously friends. However culturally they are different as the characters from 'The Blair Witch Project' are American and my characters are British.

Another similarity to each other is that both my movie and 'The Blair Witch Project' are low budget meaning the out fits are everyday outfits as well as there not being much make up (other than a bit of powder to cover shine'. Also the mise en scene is mostly what is available, for  instance, trees and grass to show the audience that the characters are out side, of a fridge and cooker to let them no the characters are in a kitchen.

A media company that could possibly distribute my media product

http://www.filmbaza.net/indexes/index-logos/h-h_logos.htm
One distributor that could be interested in my movie is 'Haxan Flims'  (1) which is a low budget movie distributor, of which created movies such as 'Lonely Molly' and 'Seventh Moon'.

I believe this film company would be interested in my media production because they are a low budget 'indie' company. I also believe they will be interested because the main genre they concentrate on is thriller/horror, most popular of which is 'The Blair Witch Project'. So with my media product being a similar theme, this  is why i believe they would be interested in 'The Slender Man'.

The audience for my media product

I believe the social group my movie is individuals. I don’t believe my audience are the type of people who would go see large, extravagant movies, such as Harry Potter, est. but rather the smaller screen, indie movies. I also believe this movie will interest internet uses who read ‘meme’s’ for example ‘meme base’ (1)

A cultural idem that is transmitted by repetition (2)

As I got my inspiration for the sporty from the popular meme ‘Slenderman’ (3)

I also believe, from my audience analysis, that my audience like : -
·        Both horrors and thrillers
·        Thing to be gory and jumpy
·        To have music in only certain parts of the movie
·        To only have some people die and to see some of the deaths
·        To have some dialogue/written laungage

I believe I have stuck close to this analysis by trying to put most of these points in at least one part of my movie opening.

So in conclusion, I  have music in certain parts, have some people die, and to have at least some dialogue, as well as you see some people die. Because half of the people I asked said that they would like a horror/thriller, gory/jumpy and Sound of Drums/Slenderman I have choosen between them. So I  decided to name it The Slender Man, as the movie if about him but I couldn't call it Slenderman because of copy right, I also chose to make it jumpy as I believe that would aloud me to show of more complex shot types, and as for the genre I decided to combind the two, so it will be a Horror-Thriller hybrid.

Final Movie Draft...

Friday 2 December 2011

Next take two...

I have completed editing and handed my second draft of my film opening, the mark I got back was a C. Satisfactory but not great, to improve my grade I plan on re doing my sound, making it more smooth and adding a more jumpy sound track to the jumpy parts. I also plan on making my transitions smoother, as well as cutting down a certain part of it so interest doesn't stray. However i plan on keeping most of the background noise out, as it gives my opening a more realist theme, which in what i want.

Movie analysis...

1. Half said horror, half said thriller
2. Half said gory, half said jumpy
3. Everyone said to have music in only certain parts
4. Everyone said to have some people die
5. 3/4 said to see the people die
6. Half said Sound of Drums, half said Slenderman
7. Everyone said so have at least some dialogue

So in conclusion, I am so have music in certain parts, to have some people die, and to have at least some dialogue, and to seen some people die. Because half of the people I asked said that they would like a horror/thriller, gory/jumpy and Sound of Drums/Slenderman I am going to have to choose between them. So I have decided to name it Slenderman, as the movie if about him, have it jumpy as I believe that would aloud me to show of more complex shot types, and as for the genre I have decided to combind the two, so it will be a Horror-Thriller hybrid.

(P.s Sorry its a bit late :P)

What do you do when you win....

I plan to use sound in a similar way the director uses it in this episode of house, I am doing this to add depth to my film opening. As well as to get the effect I want i.e. jumpy, suspense. I plan to do this by adding one track of music which will play through out most of my opening to create suspense, and then add a louder more dramatic sound over the top to make it jumpy.

Next...

So far I have filmed my new clips, and edited my old one so they would fit into my new clips. I have also downloaded some royalty free music of the Internet as the music I recorded wouldn't fit into my new movie sequence. What I plan on doing next is editing my new clips, placing them with my old ones and adding the music over the top of them. Hopefully, after all that, I shall be finished my movie to a high standard and would be able to upload it to blogger :)

First rule of fight club, don't talk about fight club...

One technique I would like to imitate in my movie opening is flashes of a character, in my case slender man, but only lasting about a second and only revealing who it really is at the end of the scene. This will create suspense and tension, and in result drawing the audience in.

Saline’s soliloquy...

(Up till 3 minutes)
In this opening scene of Underworld we see Saline, the main character, talking about a war that was going on between vampires and lycans (werewolves). It is obvious that Saline is apart of this war from the start, however it is not obvious which side she is on until the end of her speech, and at the end of this scene you see Saline effortlessly jump from the top of a sky scraper, further more proving her vampirism. This scene is set in a large city, and guessing from the weather, at the end of the year. This obviously gothic setting, sets the rest of the scene for this action horror, however unlike most other movie, the first scene of this movie doesn’t really draw you in, however the next few scenes do.

Karrange-

The target audience for this magazine is both male and female, as it features both male and female musicians, between 12 to 20 years old. These people will most likely be into bands from punk rock to heavy metal as that’s what is usually what is featured. If I was to stereotype the sort of person that would read this magazine would be emo /Goth /scene as well as C2 – E class. I know this because the fount is very bold and the colours are contrasting, making it seem bright so it’ll stand out more.

The text is selling rock music, and the bands that play it, in this case the main subject is Bill Joe from Greenday.

I believe the tone from this magazine is a ‘look at me’ almost cocky attitude, I know this from the contrasting yellow and purple colour scheme and the main subject in a quiet relaxed pose as if he just wondered onto the photo shoot for this magazine.

The ideology of this text is brighter and bolder and louder is better, again you can see this from the bright colours on the cover contrasting with the relaxed position the subject of the main photo is in.

Perliminary Movie...

This is my perliminary movie, if i were to do it again i would try some different camera angels as well as changing to a different setting. I would also spend more time editing it, possibly adding some background music to it. However I would definatly keep to the same storey line.

Media homework...

Media Homework

Cloverfeild (Beheading of the Statue of Liberty)

In this scene the actors are wearing just modern, every day, casual clothing, as the event i.e. an alien coming to earth and sending the head of the statue half way through the city of New York, happened with no warning at all. This scene if set on a random street in New York, close to the statue of Liberty so there are several cars on the street where the statues head lands, even crushing one or two, other than apartment buildings and a few other things you would normally find in an average street there aren’t many other props. I believe this was used to give the audience a sense of unease and suspense and I would like to mimic the use of shock and horror in my own work, this also will make the audience want to know what could possibly send something as heavy as the huge status head so far into the city and in such a destructive way.

Moulin Rouge (El Tango de Roxanne dance)

In this scene, the most the actors are wearing raggy dresses and shirt, as they would not be able to afford much more luxurious clothing, even Christian (Ewan McGregor) isn’t wearing very expensive clothing, only an old shirt and trousers, things you see him wearing through out the movie. However Satine (Nicole Kidman) and the Duke (Richard Roxburgh) are wearing the complete opposite, long silk dress and a smart clean tux. This scene is set in the Moulin Rouge theatre, with several tables and chairs, as well as luxurious velvet drapes and grand instruments, and the Dukes gothic mansion with expensive paintings and furniture. It’s the theatre where ‘The Unconscious Argentinean’ dances with one of the prostitutes, while singing about Christian’s jealousy of Satine and the Duke sleeping together. I think this scene is very powerful and passionate as it portrays intense emotions such as jealousy, anger and desire, I am hoping to be able to copy in my own work.

Sucker Punch (Robot train failure)

This scene shows the three of the female actresses wearing very revealing clothing, but also in the style of army/fighting clothing, this is because the main target audience for this movie is mainly for heterosexual males. The scene is set on a futuristic planet, on a train filled with androids rushing to an alien city. Like you would expect the train is all metallic and hard, with pipes and valves dotted around. It is this where the three female actresses fight the androids to defuse the bomb that will destroy the alien city, the reason I think this scene is inspirational is because out of all the missions they have to do, this one is the only one they have failed and killing one of the characters, even though at first everything looks like it is going really well. I would like to use a dramatic twist of events in my work like they did in Sucker Punch.

Red Riding Hood (Cliff hanger ending)

In this scene we scene, at first Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) saying her goodbyes to lover Peter (Shiloh Fernandez) and later on just Valerie, the actors wearing quiet old, hand made clothing mostly make out of natural materials such as wool and leather, as the film is set in the middle of a thick forest in the middle of the mountains. This also means there clothing will be very thick to protect them from the harsh cold. As I said before, this scene is set, at the beginning at the edge of a lake, and at the end, Valerie’s grandmothers. It is the end of this scene that is so inspiring. Peter has been gone for a year, as he was bitten by a werewolf and became one himself, and Valerie is living at her grandmothers. She is out side when suddenly a huge black wolf appears, then the movie end, and it is this dramatic cliff hanger ending, making the audience want to know more, that I want to replicate in my work.

Cirque Du Freak (Graveyard fight)

In this movie, you see Darren (Chris Massoglia) wearing an old tux, lying down in a coffin, and you see the vampire Mr Crepsly (John C. Reilly) wearing a bright red jacket and trousers, a very over-exaggerated outfit. The scene is set in a very stereotypical graveyard with cracked tome stones, fog, and ancient willow trees. I find this scene inspirational because although this is a rather nasty fight Mr Crepsly has with a vampire he runs into, the director manages to keep the humours aspect to the scene, which helps distract the audience from the violence. I want to use this use of different emotions and actions, change one thing to another, changing the feel of my work.

Video Intraduction...

For my Video, I have decided to do a short shorty and the mythical creature 'slenderman', the theme of this storey will be horror/thriller. The target audience for this will be between 15 and 20 years old and the class will be C1 - E. This movie will be about a boy who becomes 'Slenderman' one day while playing with his drums, instead of out with his friends because he was painfully shy. She now, because of his lonelyness, if anyone looks at him directly, he will follow them (but only moving when now one is looking) until he get close enough to touch, at which point, the person absorbles into his body. One day a group of friends crosses slendermans path, and start teasing him, so, inevertably, he starts talking them, one by one absorbing them into his body. However the friends find out about him and realise that when ever he is coming near, you her a drum solo.
